MedSafe Unlocks Solution to Teen Prescription Drug Abuse Epidemic

—Prescription Drug Deaths Outnumber Gun-Related Deaths 100,000 to 30,000 Annually—

Freeport, NY (September 23, 2009)—With a reported 2.1 million teens abusing prescription drugs annually, according to a study by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA), and an estimated 2,500 children ages 12 to 17 taking a prescription painkiller recreationally for the first time each day, a new product has launched to help curb this epidemic. The MedSafe, designed for safe and convenient storage of prescription medications, is a first-of-its-kind electronic lock-box that installs easily into home medicine cabinets, providing parents a simple solution to an escalating crisis among teens.

Michael Rebando, a veteran locksmith of over two decades, developed the MedSafe following a near-tragic incident in which his four-year-old niece was rushed to the hospital after unknowingly consuming over-the-counter medication accidentally left on the kitchen counter. After conducting research, Rebando discovered that prescription drug abuse deaths outnumber gun-related deaths roughly 100,000 to 30,000 annually.

"An isolated incident within my family led me to uncover some startling statistics about how serious the teen drug abuse problem really is," said Rebando. "After extensive research, I discovered that the vast majority of the children and teens wrongfully consuming these medications are getting them from their unknowing parents’ medicine cabinets. Prescription drug abuse deaths far outnumber gun deaths every year, yet unlike guns, most parents do not lock up their medications. I used my experience as a locksmith to develop the MedSafe and provide parents a way to keep their meds out of the hands of their children."

"Teens are abusing prescription drugs more than they use cocaine, crack, methamphetamine, and heroin combined," said Michael Boccia, co-owner of MedSafe Global. "But there is a common sense solution. If children are abusing prescription medications at these rates and they’re getting the drugs from home, parents need to lock up their meds and cut off the supply." According to a recent report by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), each year in the United States more than 71,000 children age 18 and younger are seen in emergency rooms for unintentional overdoses of prescription and over-the-counter drugs.

"I lost my son to prescription drugs, and since his death earlier this year it’s been my mission to educate parents about this problem so that they never have to go through what I have gone through," added Samantha Zherka of New York, who Rebando met while researching the problem. "Parents need to understand that even though they think their children will never be a prescription drug casualty, they must take the necessary measures to ensure their medications are not made available to their children or their childrens’ friends." The CASA study also found that nearly half of 17-year-olds surveyed said they had at least one friend who abused prescription drugs.

"As an emergency room doctor who has treated countless prescription drug overdoses and poisonings among teens and children, I can’t stress enough how important it is for parents to be aware of the dangers that exist in their home medicine cabinets," said Dr. Mark Melrose, an Emergency Room Physician and Director in the New York Metropolitan area. "Abuse is often times undetected until it’s too late and cuts across all geographic, racial and socioeconomic boundaries. It’s essential for all parents to effectively lock up their meds." "Our mission is to secure 5 million homes by 2011," said Rebando. "This is more than just a consumer product launch; we’re creating a movement to protect our children. A portion of each unit sold will support teen prescription drug abuse awareness programs through non-profits such as D.A.R.E."

"With over $700 billion in sales per year, big pharma encourages use of their products while doing nothing to address prescription drug abuse and addiction," added Boccia. "That leaves it up to us as parents to take action and keep our kids out of harm’s way by securing our meds."

MEDSAFE INC. LEADS THE CHARGE IN THE WAR ON PRESCRIPTION DRUG ABUSE
MedSafe Prescription Lockbox keeps kids safe at home by securing prescription drugs behind a computerized lock. Youngstown, OH -- July 7, 2009 -- MedSafe, Inc., has released the MedSafe Prescription Lockbox, an electronic safe for prescription drugs specially designed to fit inside most existing medicine cabinets. Constructed of impact resistant polymer and secured by a customizable digital locking system, MedSafe gives parents the ability to keep their children safe from dangerous medications.

MedSafe arrives at a time when abuse of prescription drugs has become an epidemic across the United States and around the world. Studies show that nearly one in five teenagers has used prescription medication to get high. Every day, 2500 teenagers try a painkiller for the first time and someone dies from prescription drug abuse every five minutes.

"The medicine cabinet has become the ‘drug dealer’ of choice for kids today. Kids abuse prescription drugs more than almost all illicit drugs combined," said Michael Boccia, CEO of MedSafe, Inc. "Too many parents who believe that "it’s not happening in my house" have kids who end up in the E.R., or worse, the morgue! That’s why we’ve made it our corporate mission to stem this tide of addiction and death."

Parents don’t comprehend the depth of the issue, according to Boccia, and part of MedSafe’s mission is to educate people about the growing issue of prescription drug abuse. "The vast majority of kids who’ve used prescription drugs say they got them from the medicine cabinet of parents, family members and friends. So even if you’re completely sure your own kids aren’t involved, can you say the same for their friends? Do your nieces, nephews, or grandchildren have access to your medicine chest? Anyone who keeps prescription drugs in their home needs to think about securing them, just as you would probably secure guns, and MedSafe is the easy solution."

MedSafe is partnering with non-profit organizations, from national drug abuse campaigns to local PTAs, to deliver the message and make the MedSafe Prescription Lockbox available across the country. These non-profit organizations can help promote the product as part of a fundraising campaign, thus helping to eradicate the prescription drug abuse problem and further their own cause simultaneously.

About MedSafe, Inc. MedSafe is dedicated to creating products that keep families safe in their own homes, with a particular focus on drug safety. MedSafe understands that drug safety begins with education and frank discussion in the home, but also believes that going one step further and locking up their prescription drugs can help parents keep their children alive and drug-free. A portion of MedSafe profits are donated to non-profit organizations that promote drug education and fight drug abuse.

D.A.R.E Partners with MedSafe to Tackle Teen Prescription and Over the Counter Drug Abuse at Home

—2.1 Million Teens Abuse Prescription Drugs Annually; MedSafe Seeks to Secure 5 Million Homes by 2011—

Los Angeles, CA (November 9, 2009)—With an estimated 2,500 children ages 12 to 17 taking a prescription painkiller recreationally for the first time each day, D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) announces a partnership with MedSafe, the developers of a state-of-the-art medication lock-box, to curb the problem where it most frequently starts –
at home.

"The prescription and over-the-counter drug abuse problem is the most prevalent one we’re faced with," said Frank Pegueros, Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer of D.A.R.E. "In addition to education, there are practical steps parents can take to safeguard their children from the dangers of prescription drug abuse. Since over 90% of prescription drugs abused by children are obtained in their home or the home of relatives or friends, it’s essential to keep medications secure. We’re excited about our partnership with MedSafe because we believe locking up medications in the home could essentially eradicate the problem."

Michael Rebando, a veteran locksmith of over two decades, developed the MedSafe following a near-tragic incident in which his four-year-old niece was rushed to the hospital after unknowingly consuming over-the-counter medication accidentally left on the kitchen counter.

"Before connecting with D.A.R.E, I was unaware of how far-reaching the prescription and over-the-counter drug abuse problem extends," said Rebando, MedSafe founder and Chairman. "I don’t want parents to have to go through what my family went through when my niece was rushed to the emergency room. I developed the MedSafe so that parents can rest assured knowing that their children and children’s friends are safe from the dangers of prescription and over-the-counter drugs while in their home. Together with D.A.R.E, we’re working to help save our children’s lives."

Fitting easily into most existing medicine cabinets and holding up to 15 bottles of medicine, the MedSafe features 19,500 changeable combinations. The electronic lock-box can be easily affixed to the inside of any medicine cabinet with four self-tapping screws included with each unit, and can also be stored in a dresser drawer, kitchen cabinet or closet door.

"One of the easiest ways for parents to keep their kids safe is to lock up their medications," said Mistie Bell-Banks, Director of Marketing for D.A.R.E. "We've looked at several lock-boxes on the market and found that the MedSafe provides the simplest, most effective, user-friendly, and cost-efficient deterrent out there." "We’re creating a movement to protect our children," added Rebando. "Our mission is to secure 5 million homes by 2011." The MedSafe is normally $59.95, but is available for a limited time at $39.95 at www.DARE.org, and a portion of all proceeds will support prescription drug abuse awareness programs and events.
